September 2nd, 2010    Subscribe To Our Feed

You have made the decision to bring a Labrador puppy into your life - good for you!  The next move is to get a few tips for training a Labrador young dog so you do not run into problems later.

A few things you want to keep in mind, especially about this type of dog are:

1. Labradors love people!  It’s no good getting a Lab then spending all day at work while your new dog pines for you at home.  If you are going to have a Labrador in your circle of relatives, then you have to be willing to spend lots of time with her.

2.  Labradors are an active breed, originally bred to retrieve prey from the shoot.  If they don’t spend sufficient time exercising, then you’re very probable to run into problems, both health smart (getting chunky, which will push the common problem of hip dysplasia) and in terms of behavior as a consequence of separation uneasiness.

If your Labrador is left without physical activity, she’ll get overweight and have all of the health issues associated with it.  If she is not psychologically stimulated, she’ll have behavioral problems and be tough to control.

So here are my top tips for successfully training a Labrador puppy:-

1.  Spend as much time as possible with your Labrador and use positive beefing up (treats and praise) during training sessions.

2.  Exercise your dog at least twice per day, and incorporate training into the exercise times

3.  If there are times when you will not be home for lengthened periods, make sure you have someone available who can take her for a run to feed her desire for both friendship and exercise.

Labradors are a very devoted breed.  If you give your dog the attention she correctly deserves, then the rewards will be many folds.  If you do not have time needed to raise and nurture a Lab, then please consider carefully before making the choice to bring one into your family.  If you do have the time spare, then follow these very easy tips for training a Labrador pup and you’ll have a closeness with your dog that lasts for several years.

Leash Training Your Dog

September 2nd, 2010    Subscribe To Our Feed

Whether you are taking your dog to the vet or going on walks for exercise and social interaction training your dog to use the leash will make life easier. In this way you will be assured that excursions with your dog will be pleasent for both of you.

The best time to begin leash training is with a new puppy. Training your dog to use a lease may take a couple of days or 1-2 weeks.  It all depends on the dog. The key is to be consistent.

Since dog training is so vital visit Dog Leash Training for a fantastic guide to help you train your dog.

The Dog Collar

Your puppy must first become accustomed to the feel of a dog collar. The collar should fit loosely enough that it will not choke him but it should not be so loose that it can be pulled over his head. You can tell that the collar fits correctly if there is enough room between the collar and your dog’s coat to allow your thumb to fit comfortably.

As soon as you get home place a collar on your puppy. You may find it easier to put the collar on your puppy when he is playing or eating since he will be distracted. Your puppy’s initial response will be to remove the collar. He may scratch at the collar or roll around while trying to get it off. Don’t take off the collar when he is trying to remove it. Wait until your dog is not paying attention to the collar before you remove it. Within a day or two your puppy should feel comfortable with his new collar.

The Dog Leash

Wait until your dog is feeling comfortable with his collar before introducing him to the leash. To accomplish this attach a leash to the collar and let your dog move around freely. You should use a lightweight leash at first. When your puppy feels comfortable with a leash you could get a fancier leather leash.

Don’t leave your dog unsupervised with the leash attached in case it gets caught on something and endangers your puppy. If your puppy does become entangled simply release him and allow him to continue playing. In a day or two your dog should be used to the leash. You are ready to move to the next stage of leash training when you puppy feels comfortable with the leash.

Walking with The Leash

Walking beside you on a leash is the next step in your leash training program. A good place to start this step is at home where there are not so many distractions.

When walking your dog the leash should be loose.  Your leash should also be long enough that you are not pulling your dog. Your puppy must be able to walk freely.

If you puppy pulls on the leash you must stop immediately. You will reinforce his behavior of pulling on the leash if you keep walking. Refrain from yanking on the leash and simply call your dog to come to you. When he returns to your side praise him for coming and then start walking again. Repeat this process everytime your dog pulls on the leash. Your puppy will soon learn it is not to his advantage to pull on the leash. Duplicate this process until your dog understands what is expected. Consistency is vital.

Suddenly, after a number of walks, you will realize that your dog is not pulling on the leash. Always reward your dog when he performs tasks correctly. When your puppy walks three or four steps without pulling take time to praise him and give him a treat.

Dog Leash Training an Adult Dog

It is easier to leash train a puppy than it is an adult dog. A puppy is smaller and easier to control physically. Adult Dogs, on the other hand, have greater strength as well as established habits to overcome.

Leash training an adult dog is the same procedure as training a puppy. It may be physically more difficult because of the dog’s weight but strength and you must maintain full control throughout the training process.

A harness or gentle leader can be used when leash training an older and larger dog. The harness will give you control over a dog’s body instead of putting strain on his neck. When a dog is wearing a gentle leader his head will go up when he pulls on the leash. This can be uncomfortable but it is not painful.

Leash training is a simple process. It requires time and patience but you will be rewarded with a well-behaved dog you can take just about anywhere.

I hope these ideas are helpful.  For a complete guide that will assist you in training your dog, in all situations, visit Dog Training Secrets.
