There are many ways to make your garden attractive to the birds. A safe place to feed and food they like is the easiest way. Garden bird feeders are perfect for providing food for them. They can be especially useful for the birds in the winter when they can’t find natural foods.
Attract different wild bird species by putting out their favorite foods. Examples of speciality feeders include thistle feeders to hold the tiny thistle seeds that finches love. Prevent the seeds from getting moldy by keeping them dry in a tube feeder. You could also use a window bird feeder so that you can watch the birds from inside your home.
Speciality feeders can be bought to attract hummingbirds, goldfinches and woodpeckers. Attract the birds by placing them close to your birdhouse in a safe place. Damp encourages mold so check daily that the food is dry. Clean up any spilled food around the feeder regularly to deter ants and wasps and other predators.
It is most beneficial to feed the birds in the winter but food can be in short supply at other times of the year too. You can help the birds by putting out food all year around which will help when shortages occur. Food suitable for fledglings should be provided during the breeding season as shortages can have a severe effect on them.
Put out pans of water or install a bird bath to provide a safe place for them to drink, preen and clean their feathers. Provide water at various levels as some birds will prefer water at ground level, others prefer water in containers above the ground. Containers should only be filled to a few inches and should be placed some way away from the noise around bird feeders. The sounds of running water will attract wild birds. Place a water dripper on your bird bath to attract the birds.
A natural environment in a part of the garden will increase the birds sense of security. Leaving an area to grow with wild flowers and plants can provide a very attractive area for them.
