We all love to treat our Dogs every now and again, but finding a treat that they will love and be 100% healthy for them can be quite difficult.
In my research to find my canine friends a healthy option I came across this article in the “Las Vegas Review Journals View News.” -
“More and more people are looking to healthy food alternatives to extend their lives. Why should it be different for man’s best friend?
That’s the premise behind Alaska’s Bakery. The name comes from Noreen Naidus’ 5-year-old miniature American Eskimo. Since Alaska was a puppy, he’s been eating the health-laden dog treats she bakes.
Summerlin resident Debbie Brown-Perkins has been using Alaska’s Bakery for more than a year for her miniature border collie, Sage. The package is delivered to her at work and even though they’re wrapped in a bag, Sage seems to react to it.
“He must be able to smell it,” Brown-Perkins said. “He starts jumping up and down and gets really excited. He knows it’s for him.”
Naidus, a singer, said she started baking dog biscuits because she wanted Alaska to have a long, healthy life. So she researched ingredients to learn what was best to feed him. She even double-checked her ingredients with a holistic vet to ensure she got things right.
When the terrorist attack of Sept. 11 threw the economy into a dive — and threw Naidus out of a steady job — she turned to baking health-conscious dog biscuits for an income. Her long-time friend Jim Spoto designed her product’s Web site.
But without an advertising budget, not even enough to get on a search engine, Naidus relied on word of mouth to reach new customers.
“I’m such a dreamer,” she said. “I assumed I’d open for business on a Monday and be selling orders on Tuesday.”
It was a slow process to build her client base but anyone who tried her product, not only kept re-ordering but told their friends.
Alaska’s Bakery has a standing order from Animal Kingdom Veterinary Hospital, 1325 Vegas Valley Drive, which promotes holistic healing methods for animals. Veterinarian Joanne Stefanatos carries Naidus’ dog biscuits because they are all organic and contain no preservatives. They also are cracker-like so they help maintain healthy teeth.
“You can go into those big (pet stores) and see all these products for Pets but 99.9 percent of them are junk food,” Stefanatos said. “Some of them even use arsenic and formaldehyde.”
Alaska’s Bakery items are made in flavors like pizza, beef and soy bacon. Naidus bakes them in shapes just to make it interesting. She said Dogs‘ favorite flavors seem to be chicken and peanut butter.
The treats are made without preservatives so they are baked as orders come in. Then they are vacuum sealed. The snacks can last about six months in the freezer, two months if left out on the counter … and away from Fido’s reach.
Besides ordering dog biscuits, some of Naidus’ early customers opted to buy doggie gift baskets to send to relatives in other states. Those people contacted her about obtaining more treats and the business grew a little each time.
Now Naidus overnight ships to dog owners in New York, Pennsylvania, Maine, Florida, Arizona, Texas, Utah and Illinois. Local patrons have the luxury of getting the biscuits delivered to their doorstep at no extra charge.
Naidus came to Las Vegas in 1992. Her singing career has taken her around the world and she has an impressive list of venues in her resume including the Hotel Nagoya Castle, Japan; Harrah’s Las Vegas and Illinois; Bally’s; Luxor and Caesars Palace Las Vegas.
She performed at Carnegie Hall and headlined shows on deluxe cruise ships for Cunard Line. Station Casinos calls her to perform at VIP functions and New Year’s Eve parties.
She said she loves to sing but she also would love to have her business hook up with upscale eateries. Alaska’s Bakery treats could be added to the bill whenever diners request, what else, a doggie bag.”
